Tackle It “Tool” Tuesday – Email is something that everyone has – even the junior high schools and up here in Santa Clarita create email accounts for the students so they can communicate with the teachers and each other about school items.   Email a tool that you cannot run your business without!  Email can be “rabbit hole” you down during the day and suck a lot of your time, email can be your “saving grace’ when you need something right away, email can help you get noticed and email can get you banned from connecting with your people!

It is reported, 2010 report from The Radicati Group in 2010, that the number of email accounts worldwide in 2010 is 2.9 billion and planned to increase by 2014 to 3.8 billion.  (It is noted that there is an average number of email accounts per user of 1.6 email accounts per user and they do not see that rising of this time frame)

Email Marketing…

This is the process by which you communicate and promote to your target prospects via e-mail. It works best when you’re able to build a large list of qualified prospects and then make offers to them, based on your knowledge of their psychology, feelings, buying behavior and more.

Email marketing is a way of life today!  IF you are not building a list, an audience if you will, for your message to market to – you are behind in the game.  We have talked about it tons – “The Money Is In The List”, how is your list going?

Do you have an email marketing tool/program already?  Did you know there several differences in programs and pricing plans?  Be sure you know the best way to choose or use the email marketing platform you are looking at.

Do you actually pay for unsubscribed contacts in my account?

All email marketing companies charge by the amount of email addresses/subscribers you have BUT they calculate it differently.  Some will consider your total number of email addresses in your account and some consider ONLY the active, the subscribed email addresses on your account.  For example, you have 500 people you CAN email market to and you have 100 unsubscribed you cannot email market to – some companies will keep you at the 500 email contacts list and some will bump you up to the next level!  You can be paying for contacts you cannot even market to!

What are the differences with platforms and unsubscribed contacts…

Aweber is one that charges this way – even though they  have a top notch product and there are not only a lot of security features in there and a lot of sharing capabilities, I don’t like their billing practices.  The fact that they do not tell you that you are being charged for ALL emails in your account active AND unsubscribed bothers me a bit.  When I questioned them about this, their advice was to export/delete ALL of the unsubscribed people in your account – this will help maintain a constant billing for only active receivers.

GetResponse is another email marketing platform that bills in this manner.  You are billed for your active and inactive (unsubscribed) emails on your list.  Again this email marketing platform has a lot of features to it – and is fairly inexpensive BUT no one should waste money on people you cannot market to.

Constant Contact, they charge for ONLY your active email addresses.  Even though your unsubscribed contacts stay in your account you do not get charged for them.  You get to keep a record and a history on each contact you have had over the years.

iContact is an email marketing platform that looks and feels a lot like Aweber and GetResponse but has a billing practice like Constant Contact, you pay for only those contacts that are active and are not on your unsubscribe  list. You get to have access to the history of your contacts without being charged for the unsubscribed ones.

Knowing who unsubscribes is important…

Why is it important to know who unsubscribed or when they unsubscribed?  For me a virtual assistant that works with several clients using different email marketing platforms, it helps answer several questions for the “marketer” like: how many total people have I had on my list?  What is the opt-out rate or percentage?  Clients have called asking why they are no longer receiving the ezine or broadcast – we can look them up and let them know that somehow they ended up unsubscribed and even the date – allowing them to resubscribe. And most important to me – you cannot re-import someone’s contact info IF they are on your unsubscribed list – without one you can mistakenly put their name in again asking them to opt back in and run the risk of not only pissing them off but having them report you as a spammer.

A lot of marketers take it personal when people unsubscribe from their list, yes they get notified every time someone unsubscribes. They are emailed that contacts name and email address noting they have opted out or unsubscribed. Most of the programs have a section for the person unsubscribing  to enter a reason why they are unsubscribing and most people do not fill that out.

Benefits to unsubscribe…

As a reader it is important to choose who you want information from.  It is important to be honest and not just stay on a list and not unsubscribe because you don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings. Unsubscribe and be sure to put a reason, be positive and honest – everyone will appreciate the feedback. You as a reader will lighten your load of materials in your inbox.

As a marketer you don’t want people on your list that will never read your message or are uninterested in your products/services – look for the unsubscribes, read the reasons for unsubscribing and take them into consideration – this opens your marketing space for those who want to hear from you.

Tackle It Tuesday ~ Branding in Your Copywriting! Small & Home based Businesses and Network Marketers

Tackle It Tuesday – find that ONE task that you keep avoiding and hunker down to do it TODAY!  It will be a great relief to get it finished!  One of the tasks I know people often avoid is “writing copy” – though they can put together a great sounding message there is a fear of writing.  With that fear comes dread, with the dread comes the avoidance, with the avoidance comes a plate full of writing tasks!  SO let’s look at cleaning the plate…

What is Copywriting exactly?

Copywriting is the use of words and ideas to promote a person, business, opinion or idea. Although the word copy may be applied to any content intended for printing (as in the body of a newspaper article or book), the term copywriter is generally limited to promotional situations, regardless of the medium (as in advertisements for print, television, radio or other media). The word copywriting is regularly used as a noun

A lot of people believe copywriting takes a massive skill and even though this is true it is a skill that can be developed over time.  What you don’t want to do

is to continually tell yourself you “cannot” do any copywriting – if that is true maybe you should not be in something that relates to sales in the least.  As you see in the definition above copywriting is the use of words to promote your business, person or opinion – well if you network you say your 30 second elevator speech… you did copywriting, if you are out sharing your opinions about business you are copywriting… so even if you did not realize it you are doing it everyday!  It is kinda like when you learned to ride a bike – someone is running along side of you holding the bike, next thing you  know you are so excited and you turn to look and no one has been holding you for a bit and you were doing it without even knowing it!

Copywriting takes practice!  A lot of practice!  But good copywriting skills are achievable.  There are great copywriters out there, you get email marketing everyday from copywriters – which ones sound good, which ones are way over the top? Save the good ones.  Refer back to them when you start copywriting something and see how yur message can fit into their format…

Copywriting will come to you more and more as you put in the effort to do it!

There are a couple of things you want to make sure you maintain when you go to do any copywriting…. Your Brand and Your Voice!  Don’t think your marketing materials or the items you copywrite need to be staunchy, stuffie, and over the top boring to be professional.

Be creative, informative, entertaining in all of your copywriting!  Be YOU!

There is a formula you can use to guide you in copywriting – this was put together for advertising but when you review the items, I really think it is a great guide for all copywriting.  It gives you a check list of items you should include then you put it all together with your filler words not missing any of the gotta haves!

Monetize Monday ~ Branding Tag lines… say it creativley!

Monetize Monday ~ The start of the week!  Start your week off with some motivation and focus.  Take 5 minutes and review your task list.  Do you have it organized?  Do you have a plan of action?  Is your plan the most productive?  I like to start Mondays with items that are on my task list that are revenue generating when I am scheduling items for my Tickler File, I will generally place those kinds of items on Mondays – revenue generating items for me can consist of, returning a proposal or price quote, following up on unpaid invoices, sending out promotions (I prep them Monday and will actually schedule it to be sent on a Tuesdays/Wednesday) and have new client consulting.  It is awesome to start your week headed towards the payoff.

Branding, do you use or have a tag line?

Branding is SO important to your business success. 

You might ask “What exactly do you mean by branding?”

Brand, a name, logo, slogan, and/or design scheme associated with a product or service

Having a great brand image is important for not only your visibility but for your “remember-ability” (ok that is not a word so much but it best relays what I mean, the ability for people to remember you and your business)  Along with the logo and image you use for your branding, you need a great tag line.  A brand tag line is one that becomes the “jingle” or “statement” people say with your business title/name.

Your branded tag line should be a very short part of your message, something you can say in one sentence that will relay the message of who you are, what you are about, and or the feeling they will leave with.  This is a large calling for such a little line but it can be done.  Sometimes when are thinking of your company or business name it comes to you right away and sometimes you have to enlist others to help you out.  This is a powerful “tool” in your marketing so you want to have it.  You might be saying now, “I use my name as my company or business name” you still need a branding tag line because you want to continually relay your message and have people always leave with a little piece of YOU.  If you are a network marketer, remember your branding YOU and not the company or product you work with – so be sure to get something that will attract people to work with you, follow you, seek you out…

YOU know what I mean – you do it with several corporations out there today:

  • Allstate branded, Your in good hands with Allstate. (For an insurance company, they brand themselves to be taking care of you)
  • Disneyland branded The Happiest Place On Earth. (For this amusement park, you will only find fun and happiness, ie: great times)
  • US Bank branded All of “US” serving you.  and on TV htey say – “From here to where you want to be” (For a bank being there for you, and helping you grow)
  • Tanning branded If you cannot Tone It Tan It (For a tanning company re-enforcing you can tan whatever no matter)
  • McDonalds branded I’m loving it (For a food company you are saying you LOVE it when you sing their little jingle)
  • VA-a-GoGo branded Where you go to get things done. (For a VA company it gives people the reassurance that things get done with them)
  • Wealth And Abundance Today branded Your Business Your Passion Your Success (reenforcing Your Business should be your passion and you will have success ~this might transition later)
  • Eric Worre branded Network Marketing Pro (he is setting up that he is a pro in the field and attracts you to work with him, but he does not say the company he is with)

Look at your  company/business name, do you use a branded tag line?  Does it give the message you want people to remember you for?  Is it catchy and remember-able?

Branding is fun and it is a marketing MUST.  You will use it on everything you say, print, share and give away.  It will be that piece of “branding” your networking group will share with others when referring you.  Your branded tag line is the easiest piece of your word of mouth marketing!

No business or company is too small for a branded tag line!
